Zero-Waste products, buy with a conscience

POINT OF VIEW

Being Zero-Waste is about minimizing the amount of waste we produce. To live a planet-friendly lifestyle, we can start by making smart changes in our routines. There are products on the market that help us limit waste production and these are some of them.

Reusable food storage

It is no secret that people tend to buy more than we really need and when it comes to perishable products, waste increases due to their short life. Before we look at how to store all that food, we need to think about reducing our consumption.

However, there are storage options that are really good for the planet and that considerably reduce the use of plastic, for example, reusable silicone bags, soy or beeswax wrappers that are fully washable and glass containers that we often throw away.

Solid products

Many of us use too many toiletries, there are even 18-step beauty routines! As we mentioned in the article, the first step will always be to reduce the amount of stuff we buy, but there are products we definitely can’t do without.

So, we need to make it a point to switch our personal toiletries to a Zero-Waste option. Shampoo, conditioner, soap, perfume, toothpaste, body lotion, deodorant and even styling gel or cream have a solid substitute and are so concentrated that they last much longer than bottled products, saving us time and money.

Use what you have (or make it).

Starting a sustainable lifestyle is not about running home and throwing away all our plastic items to buy Zero-Waste, that would hurt more than it would help. We can continue to use what we already have and increase its useful life.

Using glass jars from products we’ve finished or plastic containers we already have are just a few ideas, but there are more options, such as turning old t-shirts into dish towels, using food scraps to make compost or buying second-hand as often as possible. It’s all about being creative!

When what you have runs out, then yes, you can opt for a new eco-friendly product. However, make sure that it really is a Zero-Waste product. Local trade is almost always a safe bet.
