The certification system rates the following items: sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials selection, indoor environment quality, and innovation. Each category is subdivided into credits. Based on how many credits are earned, the building can earn one of the following 4 levels of certification: certified, silver, gold, and platinum.

The green building market is expected to grow by $30-40 billion per year by 2022. By then, about 10% of new commercial buildings will be green.
